Day 4: Mongolian Acapella

Today is orientation day. I woke up at about 5am. Yay jet lag. We’re pretty much besties right about now. Anyway, I woke up early, in the same clothes as July 3rd might I add. Once I was awake, I watched Netflix before breakfast. I know we should be off our phones and socialize, but it was 5am and Brooklyn 99 is on Netflix here so yay! After I watched some Brooklyn 99, Annabelle and I went down to breakfast, which was pretty good. Everybody was still kinda waking up so we didn’t talk too much. After breakfast we went to the Mongolian Experiment headquarters. We walked and it was super nice. The weather is surprisingly cool and windy. That paired with some jamming music was so relaxing. Once we arrived at the headquarters, we went to the classroom they have there.
First part of class: slideshows. It wasn’t a bad lecture, very informative. I even managed to stay awake. I’m not a bad student, lecture just ain’t my cup of tea. I learned that there are 66.5 million livestock in Mongolia. Super big. And also nomadic families are very invested in their girls going to school but not the guys. So then the educated girls stay in the city and don’t want to marry the uneducated guys. Oh snap America. Girls are the bomb.com around here. Except that although females dominate a lot of the work force such as, hospital staff, lawyers and all that, but the males still run the companies apparently. So they say the men are the heads and the women are the necks. Smart saying.

Second part is our language lesson. I was actually pretty good at remembering everything and the pronunciation, except I cannot role my r’s at all. That’s why Spanish was very frustrating. I hated saying perro but I love dogs. It was a tragedy. Anyway the language lesson was actually pretty fun. I helped some of the other kids memorize the phrases with some cool tricks. I felt super cool.
Third lesson: instruments/singing. So in Mongolia they do throat singing. It’s very guttural and kinda like their version of acapella. I was decent at it, I guess. The guys in the group were pretty good at it. I don’t usually like singing but this was pretty fun and new. After the Mongolian acapella, we played the Mongolian harp. The teacher was apparently super famous. She played a famous Mongolian piece and it was beautiful. The harp is wooden and long with strings along the fat wood board. The woman taught us how to play twinkle twinkle little star. I am a pro. I was bing bang boom, music. It was super cool and fun.

Lunch was after and it was really nice cause we were all close together and Logan sang and played his guitar. He played us some original songs. Dang he is so good. He could be like an older, male Grace Vanderwal. He was really good. Once we finished lunch we got a debrief of the next week and some safety tips. It was pretty scary. I don’t like squat potties. Once we finished the freaky lecture, we drove to the biggest market in Mongolia to buy traditional dresses for the festival later this week. It reminded me of the markets in Myanmar or Vietnam or Morocco but a lot cleaner. I bought a snazzy yellow traditional Mongolian dress. And the biggest surprise, I actually liked shopping there. I know Sydney probably just fainted from surprise and proudness. Today is orientation day. I woke up at about 5am. Yay jet lag. We’re pretty much besties right about now. Annabelle got me and she got me a cute notebook and pen since she saw me sketching and thought I would like that. I got Sarah, I got her sparkly slime.

After the  market we went to an Indian restaurant for dinner. It was good. Then we went back to the hotel and went to bed. Just a heads up I won’t be posting for a few days since I won’t have WiFi, but once I do have WiFi I will upload all of the blog posts for the week
