Day 20: Mice Mamasitas

Tonight was also a rough night. I slept with my host sister in one of the beds. While she’s awake she fine except she takes up a lot of the bed. But when she’s asleep it’s takin to a whole new level. She is a cuddler. She kept scooting super close to me and wrapping her arms and legs around me in her sleep. I kept having to gently push them off and not wake her up. Unfortunately I couldn’t move her over so I was squished against the side of the yurt the whole night. Not the best night but that’s okay I guess.

When I woke up, I was experimenting with new bracelet designs when it started pouring like crazy. All the kids covered the sleeping yurt and hung out inside waiting for the rain to let up. Since there was no light I couldn’t read or make bracelets. So I took a nap. Well I tried and failed. Since I couldn’t nap I decided to read on my phone. Once the rain cleared, we went down to a nearby really big puddle. While walking there we heard a lot of mice around. Because of the heavy rain their holes were flooded and it carried them away. We spent a lot of time helping them back to their homes. It was very fulfilling work. We could be called the “Mice Mamasitas.” I’m totally kidding that is a horrible name but I couldn’t think of an M word that refers to females. Anyway around the puddle we found some jaw bones of horses and cows. Wonderful. On the way back we helped some more mice, their hard to see so we followed the squeaks, but if you don’t watch where your going you could step on one. More than once we saw some dead mice and it scared the crap out of me. One rock I thought was a mouse and started screaming starting a screaming chain reaction but then laughed once I realized it was a rock. We also did some cartwheels and handstands on the way back. It was a fun and much needed walk. When we got back it started raining so we went in the yurt again. I started another bracelet with a brand new complicated design that I’m still perfecting. After some of that I ate horse organs for the first time. It wasn’t horrible but I did use a lot of dough and soy sauce to cover a lot of the taste. That was lunch I think. During lunch I helped make dinner. We made another kind of dumpling. Tasted the same as boots but had a different name.

After that we played Mongolian Marco Polo, but in the yurt and with clapping. It was really fun. We kept running into the posts in the yurt. The brother and wife even played. I kept running into the hanging thingy from the ceiling. It was really fun though and a great game to play at home when we’re bored. We played until it was dinner time. We ate the things I helped make. It was good. Their older cousin came for dinner too. After dinner we played Mongolian monkey in the middle. It was really funny. The brother and wife are a very happy and cute couple. I don’t fully understand the monkey in the middle but I think I kinda get some stuff. After a bit of that they started wrestling. I don’t know the rules so when they wanted to wrestle I just used my judo take downs on them. Gently of course. The little girls are extremely energetic. After the wrestling we played some soccer. It has been so long since I’ve played it’s embarrassing to see how much worse I’ve gotten. It also made me miss playing a bit. Anyway it was still fun and the brother was very into it too. Soccer didn’t last long though. The brother and wife left for somewhere and the girls went inside the yurt to cool off.

Tonight I helped them herd the goats before it got too dark. The goats are bigger scaredy cats than Cooper, which is hard to accomplish. When we got back the brother started playing with the little girls. It made me want a big brother. He was picking them up and rough housing with them. At one point they all chased him and tried to tackle him. It looked like when crazy girl fans chase Justin Bieber or something. It was really funny. Finally it got super dark and we all went in the yurt. We all talked and they tried to ask me stuff, the wife asked in Chinese but my Chinese is very limited so I was only able to answer a few of the questions. After some of that I went to bed.
