Day 17: The Day I touched cow turd

Today when I woke up, I pretended to be asleep. I slept on the floor with three other girls and I didn’t know what to do if I woke up so I pretended to be asleep. I waited till everyone woke up and most people left before getting up and getting dressed. Once everyone was up, the mom and sister in law put up all the blankets and mats. Why would you do that if your gonna pull it out again tonight. I don’t know. But it’s one of the many things I’ve noticed is different here. Another is people are a lot more comfortable seeing each other undress here and they go to the bathroom anywhere. It probably comes with the communal/everyone living really close life style they have here. Lucky for me I found a private plane to go to the bathroom. Also they treat their dogs way differently. They hit, pull and push their dogs and occasionally pet them but very rarely. The dogs are usually gone and only come back when they want to nap by the yurt.

Anyway after breakfast, I taught the girls how to make friendship bracelets. They kinda got it. The concept they understood, just the detailed techniques I couldn’t explain so it didn’t end up looking perfect but they were happy with it and that’s what matters. After some bracelet making we went to take care of the chickens. The chickens are very big and when we let them out of their hole one of the big roosters wouldn’t shut up. We fed them bread and some water, they were all pretty calm. Easy right? Wrong. After he feeding and drinking we had to get them back in their hole. They are all super skittish and if you get three feet away from them they run. We tried running them into the hole. Fail. Swinging, screaming and running then into the hold. Fail. Finally we got some in but the two roosters were stubborn butts, so we circled them and herded them into the hole and sealed it. Finally.

After the chickens, we relaxed for a while. I read which I’d been dying to do. I finally finished the book when they said we had to go pick up... cow turds. Granted they were dry and felt like grass, but the thought that they came out of a cows butthole really makes it hard to touch. But I overcame the uncomfortableness and picked up a few then held the huge bag of turds for them. Cooper and Sydney you cannot complain about dog poop now because you don’t have to used your bare hands.

Anyway after the turd fest we went back to relaxing, making bracelets and reading. We also made some Boots. It was cool to see how they did it out here. They have a huge barrel of flour they use, then when their made they put them in a pot on top of the furnace. It only took five minutes to cook and we ate. They were very good, especially with soy sauce and the sweet chili sauce. During lunch the grandparents came to visit. The grandfather said I was pretty and the grandmother coughs and spits like Yeh Yeh. I haven’t heard her sneeze yet though. After lunch we played some ball and went to see the cows. Arvin’s 18 year old cousin came by. She plays volleyball so we played some volleyball together. It was very nice with the cool weather. I love the serenity and nature of this place. Although I am a bit homesick because no one here I can talk to because no one speaks English. Also they give me more attention than I’m used to so it’s a bit weird.

Before bed we watched a Korean movie. The acting is a bit cringe but they seem to really like it. It didn’t seem bad though. Tonight I slept on the bed with another girl and again fell right to sleep
